Embracing Joy in the Midst of Storms
Aug 15, 2025
In life's most challenging seasons, finding joy can feel like an impossible quest. However, as I discovered last month, true joy isn't about what happens around us, but rather, it resides within us. At the heart of this blog post is a message inspired by recent events in my life, through which I learned the profound difference between fleeting happiness and enduring joy.
The Storm That Shook Our World
The last month was anything but ordinary. It all began with a thunderstorm that seemed to shake the foundation of my world. While caring for my elderly mother during an unprecedented storm, the scene was reminiscent of the apocalyptic imagery found in the book of Revelation. The sudden and overwhelming storm left damages we had not anticipated: a flooded basement, damaged sentimental items, and an immense tree in our backyard that was split and lying in pieces, startlingly close to the bedroom window. As my neighborhood recovered, I witnessed resilience in the face of adversity, with community members banding together to clear debris and begin repairs. But the most heart-wrenching storm wasn't from nature alone.
A Heartfelt Loss
In the aftermath, my husband George and I faced a personal storm with the sudden decline and loss of our beloved dog, Boston. A tiny creature with a massive presence, Boston's love filled our home and hearts. His unexpected demise was a crushing loss, interwoven with our struggle to deal with the tangible aftermath of the storm. We found ourselves enveloped in grief, with July proving to be a difficult and unproductive month.
The Search for Joy
Faced with sadness, I found myself contemplating the age-old question: What's the secret to finding joy when life feels anything but happy? Society often simplifies happiness to a choice or a checklist. Yet, when life's storms hit—through diagnoses, failed relationships, or loss—this advice can seem hollow. I've realized that joy, unlike happiness, doesn't rely on circumstances. As taught in Galatians 5:22, joy is a fruit of the Spirit, and it begins with being in God's presence. In times of hardship, I learned to focus on gratitude, service, and the strength found in God's promises.
Cultivating Joy
So how do we cultivate joy during challenging seasons? Here are some approaches that helped me:
- Seek God's Presence Daily:
Joy begins with a connection to God. Psalm 16:11 reminds us that in God's presence, there is fullness of joy. This involves prayer, honest conversations with God about our struggles, and immersing ourselves in His Word.
- Focus on the Positive:
As James 1:2 advises, consider trials an opportunity to choose joy. It's not about a forced sense of happiness, but rather, a conscious focus on gratitude and God's faithfulness.
- Serve Others:
Acts 20:35 emphasizes the blessings of giving. Helping others draws us out of our pain and aligns us with God's heart. Joy can be found in being a light for someone else, even amid our trials.
The Unshakeable Promise of Joy
Paul speaks of being sorrowful, yet always rejoicing. This paradox is integral to faith, where joy doesn't erase sorrow but meets us in it. I've learned that while happiness is dependent on external conditions, joy is rooted in God's unchanging nature. It's the deep peace that withstands storms and allows us to face uncertainty with courage.
Finding Joy Beyond the Storm
Even in grieving the loss of Boston, joy reappeared in shared memories and laughter with George. The vacant space left by the old tree now shines a spotlight on a young pine tree I planted 2 years ago, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. Embedded in every change is God’s constancy, a truth that brings joy capable of weathering any storm.
I hope this message offers you comfort and a reminder that joy is always within reach. Let's journey together, embracing the ever-present joy found in God's grace, truth, and love.
